Homeless people are on their feet all day, and the only pair of socks they own are very likely to be wet, especially during Seattle’s rainy time of year (September through June.) “Our feet get really chewed up,” says Fred. Working, walking around all day, and no change of socks. Yuck. You can guess how it is at night when guys in the shelter peel off their shoes.
In response, Operation Nightwatch hosts “Sock It to Homelessness” every year to kick off the seasons annual sock drive. In 2013, they collected and distributed more than 22,000 pairs of socks!
This year Tibbetts UMC will be collecting socks for the month of October. Last year we collected 166 pairs of socks, and this year, we’d like to challenge our congregation to 200 pairs of socks. Operation Nightwatch has requested that socks be men’s athletic socks “the nice, thick, comfortable ones.” Questions or comments, please contact the church office.
November 2 is All Saint’s Sunday when we will intentionally remember those connected to our community who have died in the past year. Family and friends will be invited up to light a candle in their loved one’s memory during the service as their name is read and a bell tolled. This is a very meaningful service (not to mention we get to belt out “For All the Saints”) and we hope you will be present in worship to remember and to celebrate the lives of the saints of our community and the promises of God for us all.
